Skin Care Routines - Where do I start?

A question I get asked a LOT in the salon is ‘what are the steps to a good, easy to maintain, skincare routine?’ It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the constant influx of new products, better treatments and everything else that social media and marketing throw at as from all angles these days. But what it really comes down to, is following the right steps… consistently!

It’s no secret that best skincare regimen is one that is tailored to your individual skin type, concerns, and lifestyle. However, a basic skincare routine typically includes:

Cleansing

Start your day by cleansing your skin to remove dirt, oil, and impurities that have accumulated overnight. Choose a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type/concern - whether it's oily, dry, combination, or sensitive.

Toning

While not always necessary, toning can help rebalance the skin's PH levels and remove any remaining traces of dirt or makeup. Look for alcohol-free toners with soothing ingredients like witch hazel or rose water - your skin will thank you later!

Exfoliation

Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote cell turnover for a smoother, brighter complexion. However, be mindful not to over-exfoliate, as it can lead to irritation and sensitivity. Try to stick to 1-3 times per week, depending on your skin's tolerance or use a liquid exfoliator in your toner.

Treatment Serums

If you have specific skin concerns, such as acne, hyperpigmentation, or aging, incorporate targeted treatment serums into your routine. Ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid can address various skin issues and improve overall skin health. Again, if you don’t know which active ingredient is best for your individual concerns, ask - us skin folk don’t bite, I promise!

Moisturising

Or as my 8-year-old likes to call it, the ‘moisturisation station’

Hydration is KEY to maintaining healthy skin. After cleansing and toning, apply a moisturiser to lock in moisture and prevent dehydration. Try to choose one that matches your skin type—whether it's lightweight for oily skin or rich and nourishing for dry skin. And if you’re unsure on your skin type, never be afraid to ask a professional to help figure it out with you!

SPF!

Those 3 little letters that make ALL the difference in the long run.

SPF is essential for protecting your skin from those harmful UV rays that can cause premature ageing and ultimately increase the risk of skin cancer. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days.

Weekly Treatments

Consider adding weekly treatments like masks or peels to address specific concerns or pamper your skin. Whether it's hydrating sheet masks, clay masks for deep cleansing, or chemical peels for exfoliation, these treatments can enhance the efficacy and longevity of your skincare routine - and who doesn’t love a little pamper mask of an evening!?

What it really comes down to with skincare is remembering that consistency is key. Stick to your routine and give your skin time to respond to the products you're using - and if something isn’t working, switch it out and try something new! Don’t be afraid to adjust your regimen as needed based on changes in your skin or your environment (or the very temperamental British weather…) If you're unsure about which products or ingredients are best for your skin, you’re always welcome to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional (like myself) for personalised recommendations!
