Let’s be honest: the world of tweakments can be a little confusing when you’re just starting out. You’ve probably heard friends talk about Botox or dermal fillers (maybe both), but if you’ve ever secretly wondered, “What’s the actual difference?” - you’re not alone.
The good news is that I’m breaking it all down for you, nice and simply, so you can feel informed and confident about your options.
Botox vs. Fillers: What’s the Real Difference?
While they’re both injectables used to reduce signs of aging and enhance your natural features, Botox and fillers actually work in totally different ways.
Botox
Botox (short for Botulinum Toxin) works by temporarily relaxing targeted muscles, which softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by movement—think frowning, squinting, raising your brows, or smiling.
These are called dynamic wrinkles because they come from repeated facial expressions over time. Botox doesn’t “fill” these lines - it simply reduces the muscle activity that causes them.
Dermal Fillers
Fillers are typically made from hyaluronic acid, a substance your body naturally produces. They work by adding volume, restoring structure, and smoothing out deeper creases that aren’t caused by movement alone—these are called static wrinkles.
Fillers are also brilliant for enhancing facial contours: think plumper lips, lifted cheeks, or a more defined jawline. They literally “fill in” areas where volume has been lost or where you want a little more definition.
What Can Botox Treat?
Botox is the go-to treatment for softening wrinkles caused by expression—and it can be used in more areas than you might think. Here are some of our most popular Botox zones:
Forehead lines – Horizontal lines that deepen with movement (aka “thinking lines”).
Frown lines / Glabella lines – Those vertical “11s” between your eyebrows.
Crow’s feet – Fine lines around the outer corners of the eyes.
Brow lift – A subtle lift to open up tired-looking eyes.
Bunny lines – Little scrunch lines on the nose.
Gummy smile correction – Botox can relax the upper lip so less gum shows when you smile.
Lip flip – A tiny amount of Botox in the upper lip to subtly roll it outward.
Masseter reduction – Slims a square jawline or helps with teeth grinding.
Chin dimpling – Softens the “orange peel” texture some people get.
Botox results usually start to show in 3 to 7 days, with full results in about 2 weeks, and effects lasting around 3–4 months, depending on the area treated and your body’s response.
What Can Fillers Do?
Fillers are incredibly versatile and offer both rejuvenating and enhancing results. Some of our favourite ways to use dermal fillers include:
Lip filler – From subtle hydration and shape to more volume and definition.
Cheek filler – Adds contour and restores the lift that can fade over time.
Nasolabial folds – These deeper “smile lines” can be softened with added volume.
Marionette lines – The lines running from the corners of your mouth toward your chin.
Chin enhancement – Helps balance the profile or create a more defined look.
Jawline filler – Creates structure and sharpens definition.
Tear trough filler – Reduces under-eye hollows and that “tired” look.
Temple filler – Fills out hollowness that can make the face look gaunt.
Hand rejuvenation – Yes, fillers can even be used to smooth aging hands!
Results from dermal fillers are visible instantly, with some minor swelling or bruising that settles within a few days. Depending on the area and the product used, results can last anywhere from 6 months to 18 months.
Should You Get Botox or Fillers?
Here’s the thing—it’s not about choosing one or the other. In many cases, the most natural, refreshed look comes from a combination of both.
Think of it like this: Botox is best for smoothing lines caused by movement. Fillers are best for restoring volume and structure.
Used together (in the right doses and the right places), they complement each other beautifully.
